If you or someone you love is living with chronic kidney disease (CKD), yoga might be a powerful support tool on the journey to better health. A recent systematic review published in Cureus highlights how regular yoga and meditation practices can actually improve quality of life for people with CKD, including those on dialysis.

What’s especially heartening is that the benefits showed up across both body and mind. The studies reviewed included yoga techniques of varying styles, and intervention durations that varied in length from eight to 24 weeks. A common theme across these studies was that participants reported lower levels of fatigue, anxiety, and depression, challenges that are all too common among people managing CKD. Even more impressive? The group also had better sleep and reported feeling more in control of their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which are important factors in managing CKD.

The practices used in the study were simple and gentle. Think breathing techniques, guided meditation, and beginner-friendly poses (like seated twists or gentle forward folds). That means you don’t need to be super flexible or experienced to benefit. These movements help reduce stress hormones in the body and improve circulation, both important for kidney health and overall well-being.

At Yoga District, we believe yoga is for everybody, especially those navigating health challenges. That’s why many of our classes offer modifications and focus on accessible movement and breathwork. Whether you’re dealing with CKD or just looking for a calmer, more balanced life, this study is a great reminder that healing doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with a single deep breath.
